Congratulations to the CON Party of Canuckistan. They have completed a bloodless coup of Canada and no one raises a voice. Have we gone so far stupid in Canada that we do not even raise an eyebrow when the government says that they own the country rather than just represent its citizens?
We don't deserve a country such as Canada. Our forefathers and foremothers fought and died for our democracy and we just gave it away.

Where are the Tories taking the country?
In the 2008/09/10 economic meltdown, the boogieman under the bed and the thing that we knew but did not talk about, was derivatives. It is estimated that there are $2 trillion (that is TRILLION) in derivatives that have been ignored by Wall Street, Bay Street and governments and those derivatives are going to come back to bit our collective butts.
And let's not be too smug about this, our Canadian banks are just as exposed to the toxic derivatives as any one else.
So what does the collected brain trust on Parliament Hill do about it?
They propose that derivatives should be sold on the open market just like IBM or Apple. That was they can spread out the pain when derivatives get called?
This is LUNACY!!!!!
And let's not be too smug about this, our Canadian banks are just as exposed to the toxic derivatives as any one else.
So what does the collected brain trust on Parliament Hill do about it?

CPC Youth are chowing down
he CPC youth wing is crashing down in a ball of fire. Apparently there are a number of Youth members who are acting like like they are adult CPCers and are practicing eating their own.

I am surprised that the party has so far decided to turn a blind eye to the activities of their own staff members against fellow conservatives. The party may not be able to control what its staff do in their spare time, but the party certainly is under no obligation to retain these staff members. In light of indecisiveness on the part of the party, I have created the following facebook group in response:

If the party isn't willing to fire its staff members who are promoting this character defamation and libel, than those of us who have been subjected to it are obligated to take our case directly to party members, party donors and the media. I believe this matter could be easily resolved if the party made a public promise to fire any staff members involved in a group making defamatory statements about fellow party members and conservatives.
The seriousness of this matter should not be doubted, as identity theft and libel are indictable offenses under the law. I don't think those of us who have been defamed ought to seek legal counsel at this point, as this matter can easily be solved internally by the Conservative Party of Canada. To move to that phase would surely cause further embarrassment for all parties involved.

It's Saturday in Ottawa
There are two ways to tell if it is Saturday in the Nation's capital.
The first is to look at the sky. If it is raining, it's Saturday.
The second is to look at page A6 of the local newsrag. Sure enough on A6 of today's bird cage liner is an innocuous article touting FinMin Flaherty saying that Canada's has turned the corner on the recession -- green shoots are showing -- things are looking rosy. Buried in the article is a toss away line stating that the deficit for 2009 has been pegged at a measly $75 billion.
What?
Flaherty told us a few weeks ago that the deficit would be about $50 billion., Now it is 50% higher at $75 billion? Can't this guy count? Or is he just a serial liar?
In the space of 10 months, Flaherty and the Con government have gone from predicting surpluses to small deficits to large deficits to, now, a humongous deficit. And I wager to say that he is not finished yet.
In his last update, before this one, Flaherty touted that the deficit would only be $85 billion over the next 5 years. He poopooed the bank economist who said it will be more like $156 billion. Now he is up to $75 billion in the first of the 5 years and there is no end in site.
Is that what you want from a government?

Cons are toast
When the infighting begins, the end is at hand.
The social networking site has a new group that I was invited to join. The invite came from a contact of mine who is a die-hard Con supporter. The group is labelled, "Fire CPC Staffers in the "No Youth Wing" and it shows how concerned Harper is to losing his digs at 24 Sussex and how even more concerned are the Con Hill staffers at losing their keys to the executive restrooms.
This is how the group is described: "The Conservative Party of Canada has chosen to turn a blind eye to the activities of its own staffers who - unsatisfied with only impugning the motives of grieving parents of fallen Canadian soldiers - have now decided to employ their defamatory rhetoric to create a "phony war" against fellow conservatives in the hopes of proving their loyalty to the PMO and keeping their cushy party jobs. The party cannot turn a blind eye to the activities of those under their employ. Here are the facts:

They wouldn't even listen when they were offered free food
About a month back, in July, the Cons held a $150/head dinner in Montreal with PM Harper as the key note. The place was packed with 2000 screaming bodies -- apparently. According to sources close to the situation, the reality was that a great number of the attendees were given free tickets. They were there for the free food. Now that's transparency!Even with the free food, a large part of the crowd were asked to quiet down during the PMs scintillating 30 minute speech. Apparently there weren't saying, "Right on, Steve" or "You go, boy," They were yelling across the table for someone to pass the butter or the buns. I wonder if there was a chance of a good food fight?
Cons are toast in Quebec? Right on!

Regulate the regulators?
I am not a great fan of government regulation. The problems with government is they tend to go overboard in their regulation zeal trying to make one policy fit all. When exceptions pop up, so too new regulations.
Sometimes the best regulation is none at all... but not in all cases.
The case for regulation. The Con government is trying to back door Bill C-7. C-7 is An Act to Amend the Aviation Act. Get that? This is an Act to amend an Act. You can't just amend an Act; you have to pass an Act to amend an Act. But let's not get off topic. C-7 was originally called C-6 but C-6 died at first reading in 2007 when Harpo called an election. C-7 was introduced at third reading by Harpo but it also died when the Cons defeated themselves and called another election.
Now C-7 is being contemplated to be enacted. Notice that I said enacted not passed. The Con government wants to enact the regulations contained within C-7 without bringing them to a vote in the Commons. They have the right to do this of course. I do not argue against that right. So what's my point?
The Cons want to amend the Aviation Act to allow for something called a Safety Management System (SMS). What you may ask is an SMS? I had no idea what it was until I attended a round table discussion on Aviation Safety this week on the Hill. All MPs and Senators were invited by the NDP transport critic to attend the round table to hear from people in the know. Two Dippers attended and no-one else. What did the others miss?
They missed first person stories of how Transport Canada has screwed up airline safety regulation in this country to the point that they will, through the provisions of faux-C-7, now get out of the business of regulating airlines all together. From now on, if the Cons and Transport Canada get their way, there will be no more government inspections of airlines or airplanes in Canada. Those inspections will be done by the airlines themselves.
Doesn't that give you a warm feeling in the special spot? Cause, don't forget that we are not just talking about Air Canada and Westjet. We are also talking about air taxis, air ambulances, bush companies and a myriad of other medium and small companies who will now regulate themselves. The body count will rise thanks to Harpo and his band of idiots. Don't believe me? Take a look at what has happened in the financial industry since they became self-regulating.
As I told the round table committee, it is interesting to note that govenment will inspect a six foot non-structural wall that I build in my basement but they will not inspect a plane designed to carry 10s and 100s of men, women and children.
SMS was designed to augment government inspections and regulation; not replace it.
Now let's take a look at the other side of the coin. At a Food Safety Town Hall meeting last night, we learned that farmer's markets were regulated as if they were five star restaurants. We also learned that, by simply changing a regulation, a local farmer can lose his organic farm status even though his farming practice has not changed in thirty years. The regulators claim to know farming better that the farmers.
We regulate the hell out our local food produced. We inspect it at every point in the system from production to consumption but, we do not, or can not, regulate the food that we bring in from outside the country. That is why we get melamine in our melons from China.
All in all, it is a bad time to be a Canadian.

Watching the junkyard
A watchdog is an animal which is trained to watch over something and alert the owners when something is amiss. A budgetary watchdog is a person trained to watch over the budgets and financial statements released by the government and, should something be amiss, alert its owner - the TAXPAYERS OF CANADA.
This Con government has been nothing if not consistent. They have lied about their advertising expenses during the election; they have lied to Canadian about their intent to fold the gun registry; the have blocked committee work (and then blamed the delays on the opposition) and they have delayed their own legislation all the while blaming the Senate for the delays. They even called an election for no reason then blamed the opposition for bills that were dropped due to their election.
Now they are telling the budget watchdog, who is supposed to protect the wallets of Canadians to sit down and shut up. The Auditor General just released a statement saying that she is disappointed that the government will not even provide broad stokes information on who will get the $3 billion slush fund they have set and for what?
The Con government is corrupt. It serves itself and not Canadians. It is passed its shelf life and should resign in disgrace and waddle on back to whence it came.

Can you say Sponsored Branch Plant?
An organization that 99.9% of Canadian have never heard about is proposing to sell off the remainders of Canadian business to anyone who wants it.
The Competition Policy Review Panel, that the Harper government appointed, is mandated to identify the changes Canada needs to make to prepare for full-scale North American economic integration. Of course that is not its official mandate but that is what they are planning to do.
On June 26, 2008 the Panel, headed by Red Wilson, former CEO of BCE - a company looking for a buyer - released its report to Harper entitled Compete to Win. The report puts forward a series of policy recommendations aimed at making Canada a more attractive destination for talent, investment and innovation, as well as a sweeping national Competitiveness Agenda based on the proposition that Canada’s standard of living and economic performance will be raised through more competition in Canada and from abroad. Greater competitive intensity in Canada will yield better products at lower prices, more jobs and higher earnings, stronger companies, and a stronger economy.
How will they accomplish these goals?
The report listed policy recommendations to the federal government which include:

The report includes the following statement: “One of our key findings is that Canada needs to get its act together as a nation.”
I agree. And the first thing we should agree on is that the Harper initiative to sell off Canada should cease to exist.

- Liberalizing investment restrictions in the Canadian air transport, uranium mining, and telecommunications and broadcasting sectors, and removing the defacto ban on mergers in the financial services sector;
- Updating and modernizing the Competition Act in line with best practices internationally;
- Creating a Canadian Competitiveness Council to give voice to and advocate for competition in Canada, and ensure sustained attention by governments on national competitiveness.

Sparrow is the tip of the Con iceburg
Senior Conservative Party spokesman Ryan Sparrow has been suspended from the campaign after stating in an email message to CTV producer Jenna Fyfe that the father of a slain soldier who criticized Stephen Harper today was a Liberal and that his criticism of Harper's plan pull out from Afghanistan was politically motivated.
Jim Davis' son, Corporal Paul Davis, died in Kandahar in March of 2006. Mr. Davis told CTV's Canada AM he was shocked by Mr. Harper's pull out comments. He said his son will have died in vain if Canada withdraws before its mission is complete.
So Sparrow was "suspended" from the campaign. Not fired, mind you. He was suspended - 2 minutes in the penalty box.
But this is not an isolated incident for the Cons. Puffin-gate occurred last week when a Con web programmer decided that it would be funny to have a bird shit on Stephane Dion.
These actions; plus the fact that the Harper took the campaign negative before the writ was even dropped; plus the antics of various Con MPs such as my favourite, Perfect PP, all lead me to believe that the Cons think that they are entitled to govern. Screw the voters - Cons are entitled to their entitlements.

Cons are trying again to con Canadians
Fast forward to 2008 and the pending election that will be called in a few days.
Environment Minister "Screamer" Baird has just announced $13 million of our own money to help solve a sewage issue in Ottawa; a problem that will cost over $50 million just to get under control, let alone fix. Also, Harper is about to announce an investment of up to $200 million of our own money in subsidies to Ford and GM. This is on the heals of Finance Minister Flaherty saying that Ontario is the last place in the world anyone would want to invest.
And in the spirit of open government, Harper will call the election just as Election Canada will enter very damaging evidence in the In and Out Lawsuit that the Cons launched against Election Canada. The election call will force Elections Canada to delay the new evidence until after the election. We might just re-elect criminals?
And there is a chance that they might get re-elected? Only if the Liberals are too stunned to fight a real election and not just a referendum on their Green Shift.
